Complete Guide to Pharmaceutical Drying Equipment — VTD, TD, FBD & ANFD

Drying is one of the most widely performed unit operations in pharmaceutical manufacturing. Nearly every solid and semi-solid product requires some form of drying — whether removing residual moisture from granules after wet granulation, drying API after synthesis, or controlling moisture in finished tablets. Selecting the wrong drying equipment leads to API degradation, non-compliant LOD values, failed dissolution tests, and regulatory rejection.

This comprehensive guide covers every type of pharmaceutical drying equipment — their working principles, applications, advantages, limitations, and selection criteria. As a leading pharmaceutical drying equipment manufacturer in India, Bipin Pharma Equipment manufactures Vacuum Tray Dryers, Tray Dryers, Fluid Bed Dryers, and Agitated Nutsche Filter Dryers.

The Four Main Types of Pharmaceutical Drying Equipment

Vacuum Tray Dryer (VTD) Bipin Pharma Equipment India
Vacuum Tray Dryer (VTD)

Vacuum drying at 30–80°C for heat-sensitive APIs, herbal extracts, and solvent-wet intermediates. Solvent recovery available.

Fluid Bed Dryer (FBD) Bipin Pharma Equipment India
Fluid Bed Dryer (FBD)

Fluidized hot-air drying in 20–60 minutes. Standard dryer for wet granulation lines. Can also granulate and coat.

Agitated Nutsche Filter Dryer (ANFD) Bipin Pharma Equipment India
Agitated Nutsche Filter Dryer (ANFD)

Combined filtration and vacuum drying in one closed vessel — essential for potent API manufacturing.

1. Vacuum Tray Dryer (VTD)

The VTD operates under reduced pressure, drying product at temperatures as low as 30–40°C by lowering the boiling point of moisture/solvent. Heat is supplied conductively through hollow shelves. Key advantages: protects heat-sensitive APIs, enables solvent recovery, prevents oxidation under vacuum, and handles hygroscopic materials. See our complete VTD manufacturer guide and how vacuum drying works for more detail.

2. Tray Dryer (TD)

The Tray Dryer circulates hot air over product-loaded trays at atmospheric pressure. It is the simplest, most economical dryer — ideal for thermally stable granules, crude drugs, herbal materials, and food products. Drying times of 6–24 hours are typical. Not suitable for heat-sensitive products, solvent drying, or hygroscopic materials that re-absorb moisture from the hot air stream.

3. Fluid Bed Dryer (FBD)

The FBD fluidizes granule particles in heated air, achieving uniform, rapid drying in 20–60 minutes. It is the standard dryer in wet granulation lines, positioned immediately after the Rapid Mixer Granulator. Modern FBDs can also perform granulation (with spray nozzle) and pellet coating (with Wurster insert). See the complete FBD manufacturer guide for full specifications.

4. Agitated Nutsche Filter Dryer (ANFD)

The ANFD combines pressure/vacuum filtration, cake washing, and vacuum drying in a single closed vessel. It is essential for potent API manufacturing, controlled substance synthesis, and multi-solvent processes where full operator containment is required and open product transfers must be eliminated. See the complete ANFD working principle guide for details.

Key Takeaway

Every pharmaceutical drying application has a best-fit equipment type. For wet granulation lines, the FBD is essential. For API drying with solvents, the VTD is the standard. For potent APIs requiring containment and multi-function processing, the ANFD is the only compliant choice. The Tray Dryer remains the most economical option for standard atmospheric drying.
