What is a Rapid Mixer Granulator?

The RMG is a batch-type, high-shear mixing and granulation machine. It consists of a stainless steel bowl, a bottom-driven main impeller (with two or three blades), and a side-mounted high-speed chopper. The impeller creates a fluidized mixing zone, while the chopper breaks down wet lumps to produce uniform granules. The entire process — from dry mixing to wet granulation — happens in the same sealed bowl, minimising contamination risk and reducing batch cycle time.

Working Principle of Rapid Mixer Granulator

Stage 1 — Dry Mixing

API and excipients (lactose, MCC, starch, etc.) are charged into the RMG bowl and dry mixed at low impeller speed for 3–5 minutes. The impeller creates a vigorous circulation pattern, distributing all ingredients uniformly before the wet phase begins.

Stage 2 — Binder Addition and Wet Massing

Binder solution (aqueous PVP, HPC, starch paste, or granulation solvent) is added — either manually through the top port or via a spray nozzle. The impeller speed is increased, and the chopper is activated. The binder distributes through the powder bed, and wet massing begins. The high shear and chopper action transform the wet mass into granules.

Stage 3 — End-Point Determination

Granulation end-point is determined by monitoring power consumption of the impeller motor (current rise indicates optimal granule formation), or by taking periodic samples to assess granule size and texture. Experienced operators also use visual and tactile assessment ("hold test"). Accurate end-point control is critical — over-granulation produces hard, dense granules that compress poorly.

Stage 4 — Discharge

Wet granules are discharged from the bottom outlet valve of the RMG bowl directly into the Fluid Bed Dryer's product container (bowl) for drying. The RMG-to-FBD transfer is usually done via a direct coupling or a flexible transfer tube to maintain GMP containment.
